Cine, ciencia y veneno

La relación entre los venenos y los seres humanos es larga y variada. Existe una gran diversidad de productos naturales o artificiales que pueden producir una gran cantidad de efectos, más o menos rápidos y mortíferos, según las dosis, las vías de administración o los rasgos físicos de la persona envenenada, entre muchos otros factores. No es sorprendente, por lo tanto, que se encuentren referencias (tanto directas como metafóricas) a los venenos en textos religiosos, literarios, legales y médicos muy antiguos de muchas culturas. Aunque no tan prolongada, existe también una larga relación entre el cine y los venenos que se ha tratado de reflejar en varios ciclos desarrollados en el Instituto de Historia de la Medicina y de la Ciencia «López Piñero» (IHMC). El Instituto desarrolla ciclos dedicados a ofrecer perspectivas críticas acerca de temas de ciencia, tecnología y medicina. Más de cincuenta ciclos han sido ya realizados desde que se comenzó a programar esta actividad en colaboración con el aula de cine de la Universidad de Valencia hace algo más de cinco años. Las lecturas han sido diversas, fruto de la interacción entre personas interesadas en el cine y las que trabajan en los diversos temas antes señalados, en muchos casos, como es lógico, desde el punto de vista de la historia de la ciencia, la medicina y la tecnología. 

Madeleine Smith

El último ciclo dedicado a los venenos en el cine contó con la participación de especialistas en el tema, junto con personas expertas del aula de cine. Por ejemplo, la película dedicada a la vida de Madeleine Smith, una supuesta envenenadora escocesa de mediados del siglo XIX, fue presentada por la autora de una investigación sobre un caso similar sucedido en Madrid también por esas mismas fechas: el envenenamiento de María Bonamot, sobre el que también se podría realizar una película. En ambos juicios, las investigaciones realizadas y los informes periciales no fueron concluyentes y dejaron una sensación de incertidumbre y misterio. Como en otros casos famosos de envenenamiento, los juicios generon fuertes controversias, tanto dentro como fuera de los tribunales.

A Blueprint for Murder

En la última de las sesiones del ciclo de cine se proyectó «A Blueprint for Murder», una película sobre un caso imaginario de envenenamiento con estricnina, contó con la presencia de personas especializadas en medicina, toxicología y criminología. Se discutió así sobre la diversidad de agentes venenosos, sus múltiples efectos y su disponibilidad para las manos criminales. También se trataron las líneas borrosas que separan medicamentos y venenos, así como entre enfermedad y envenenamiento, lo que también está relacionado con la dificultad de detectar los venenos. A pesar de ser poco habitual, el crimen de envenenamiento causa gran alarma social por su carácter secreto y premeditado. Motivado por intereses económicos o pasiones amorosas, el crimen se realiza muchas veces en el hogar con víctimas indefensas que suele tener una relación de proximidad con la persona sospechosa o autora del crimen.

Es cierto que, como reflejan estas películas, suelen mencionarse más mujeres envenenadoras que hombres. Esta situación procede no tanto de estadísticas fiables como de casos famosos y, sobre todo, de la representación del envenenamiento como un crimen femenino, reforzada por una gran cantidad de textos literarios, jurídicos e históricos. Y también científicos. Con una base empírica más bien endeble, a partir de ejemplos sesgados y noticias de segunda mano, Cesare Lombroso y sus seguidores trataron de acomodar algunas de estas ideas en el discurso científico de la nueva criminología de finales del siglo XIX. Por ejemplo, el famoso juicio de Marie Lafarge, acusada de envenenar a su marido en 1840, sirvió como fuente de ideas para sustentar los apartados dedicados al envenenamiento de la obra de Lombroso.

La donna delinquente

En su libro La donna delinquente (1893), Lombroso utilizó estos casos famosos y otros de esos años para establecer rasgos de las envenenadoras: inteligentes, manipuladoras y grandes creadoras de ficción, con habilidades para la invención de historias convincentes y construir coartadas. Inspirado por estas ideas, un autor de esos años afirmó con contundencia que «solamente en los crímenes realizados por mujeres» se podía «encontrar este genio por la perversidad, esa prodigiosa facilidad para el engaño». Párrafos como el anterior muestran de forma transparente los sesgos de género de este tipo de aproximaciones. No hay que olvidar que fueron reputados criminólogos y médicos forenses de principios del siglo XX los que realizaron estas afirmaciones bajo el amparo de la ciencia de su tiempo. Sus afirmaciones, ungidas con las virtudes epistemológicas de la ciencia sirvieron para extender todavía más las conexiones entre venenos y mujeres, hasta transformarlas en un imaginario habitual en muchos tipos de producciones culturales, incluyendo el cine y la literatura, pero también la medicina y la ciencia.

Estas consideraciones deberían servir para prevenir del peligro cientificista en torno a las representaciones cinematográficas de la ciencia, la medicina y la tecnología. Resulta especialmente contraproducente abordar el asunto mediante procedimientos inquisitoriales, con el fin de detectar «errores» en la representación artística de la ciencia. Se asume así que los «errores» están siempre del lado del arte, nunca de la ciencia. El papel del científico queda limitado a «corregir» al artista, sin esperar nada a cambio. La única relación lícita se representa de modo unidireccional, desde el laboratorio hacia los estudios de cine, desde la ciencia hacia la literatura y el cine. Por el contrario, las historias de cine, ciencia y veneno antes comentadas ofrecen ejemplos de situaciones mucho más complejas e inquietantes. 

Muchos más ejemplos acerca de estas cuestiones han sido revisadas en el libro editado por Heike Klippel Bettina Wahrig y Anke Zechner en 2017: Poison and Poisoning in Science, Fiction and Cinema: Precarious Identities (Palgrave Studies in Science and Popular Culture). Este libro está basado en un congreso en el que participaron más de una docena de especialistas de todo el mundo. Es una colección de ensayos sobre envenenamientos, que revisan las sustancias, las personas, los imaginarios y los discursos del veneno, así como su marco social y político, todo ello desde la mirada privilegida del cine, una perspectiva que permite conocer las negociaciones de identidad y estabilidad, de secreto y visibilidad, repetidas en las representaciones venenosas del medio cinematográfico. Los venenos se configuran así como «sustancias de ontología precaria» a través una triple inestabilidad articulada en torno a la inconmensurabilidad, la infradeterminación y la construcción constante de identidad, tanto en discursos científicos y médicos como en relatos de ficción. Los capítulos del libro muestran numerosos ejemplos de estas situaciones a través de un gran número de películas de una amplia variedad de países. El veneno aparece así como un producto precario, sustancia material y fantasma al mismo tiempo, elemento invisible y perturbador, con amplio potencial metafórico, capaz de catalizar el futuro o destruirlo en mil pedazos. Pensar los venenos, también desde el cine, permite así analizar las tensiones sociales con sus sesgos y desequilibrios ocultos.

«Tóxicos: Pasado y Presente»

Tóxicos: Pasado y Presente. El libro ofrece claves para pensar históricamente los productos tóxicos como entidades materiales y políticas al mismo tiempo. Es evidente que sus cambiantes efectos tóxicos no pueden ser entendidos al margen de las sociedades que los crean, consumen y toleran. Tampoco pueden comprenderse adecuadamente sin tener en cuenta la desigual distribución de riesgos y beneficios que refuerzan o generan los productos tóxicos. A través de diversos episodios, productos y personajes, este libro revisa la producción de saberes e ignorancias en torno a los tóxicos durante los dos últimos siglos. Se emplean las más recientes investigaciones históricas que movilizan nociones como agnotología, epidemiología popular, zonas de sacrificio, mercaderes de la duda, barreras de la pericia y objetos sociotecnológicos, todo ello para huir de los marcos de discusión procedentes tanto del cientificismo tecnocrático como del relativismo postmoderno. Se discuten así los cambiantes regímenes de gobierno de la contaminación industrial, la salud laboral, la calidad de alimentos y los daños ambientales. Se analizan también las respuestas de las víctimas para conformar saberes, cuidados y acciones colectivas frente a las violencias lentas, los desequilibrios epistémicos y las injusticias ambientales del mundo tóxico.
